Sharpe Objects: Book Club Friday

Remember those New Years resolutions you made a little over a month ago?  How are you holding up?  One of my resolutions was to read 30 books this year and so far I've completed 3.  It's a start right?  Next up on the reading list is: 'The Hangman's Daughter'.

GoodReads says: WICKED above her hipbone, GIRL across her heart
Words are like a road map to reporter Camille Preaker’s troubled past. Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, Camille’s first assignment from the second-rate daily paper where she works brings her reluctantly back to her hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.

NASTY on her kneecap, BABYDOLL on her leg
Since she left town eight years ago, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed again in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille is haunted by the childhood tragedy she has spent her whole life trying to cut from her memory.

HARMFUL on her wrist, WHORE on her ankle
As Camille works to uncover the truth about these violent crimes, she finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Clues keep leading to dead ends, forcing Camille to unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past to get at the story. Dogged by her own demons, Camille will have to confront what happened to her years before if she wants to survive this homecoming.

With its taut, crafted writing, Sharp Objects is addictive, haunting, and unforgettable.

The Lowdown: I was really impressed by Gillian Flynn!  I was reluctant to read this book after her latest book 'Gone Girl'.  I loved the writing style and wit of 'Gone Girl' but did not like the characters.  By the end of the book, I could care less if the characters died.  That's not saying much, is it?  Anyway, this book was a pleasant surprise and seemed to have it all; the writing, story-line,  characters, and wit!

Honestly, I have to wonder about the author and how she comes up with the story lines.  This is a very dark and disturbing book.  I'm sure you might have caught on reading the book description.  Gillian Flynn does a magnificent job at keeping the reader entertained and keeping the mystery going.  I had made up my mind by the middle of the book on who the killer was and just like her other book, there's a twist!  This is definitely the kind of book I love!  As you read, you learn more and more about Camille's (the main character) past and who she is with each chapter.  I really felt like I knew her and was routing for her from the beginning to the end.

If you are up for a good mystery with some gory and disturbing details then this is the book for you!

  1. I loved Gone Girl and it made me want to read others of hers. This one will be next on my list! And I agree with you about Gillian Flynn's imagination: just how does she come up with this stuff? I wonder what she's like in person...haha! Thanks for the review!

  2. I have heard good things about this! And knowing how much I enjoyed Gone Girl, I get the feeling this is one I'd likely enjoy as well.
